Today in the eyes of the editorial staff: The Flagler County Commission, which met only once in July, is meeting this morning at 9 a.m. at the Government Services Building, 1769 East Moody Boulevard, Bunnell. The Commission will consider approving a lease with Marvin’s Garden, where the Bunnell branch library is to relocate pending the still promised and never delivered South Branch Library. The current location of the library is being converted into a mental health operation. Arthur Kuepper and Robbyn Mackler are expected to be appointed to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Council. The committee may wish that the commissioner Andy Dance a happy birthday: he is 58 years old today. Lucky for him, he’s sharing his birthday with James Baldwin (see today’s quote below). The full agenda and background documents are here. In class, felony indictments are at 8:30 a.m. before Circuit Judge Terence Perkins in courtroom 401 of the courthouse. A reminder for our esteemed Palm Coast City Councilor, Victor barbosa: today is the feast of Our Lady of the Angels in Costa Rica.

Vaccinations and Covid tests: Given the unprecedented volume of positive Covid-19 cases in our community, the Flagler County Health Department has changed its testing and vaccination schedules for the first and second weeks of August. All tests and vaccinations will take place on Monday August 2 and Tuesday August 3 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm at the Flagler County Health Department, 301 Dr. Carter Blvd, Bunnell.

Snyder also said the department is prioritizing testing for people with symptoms of COVID and that testing is by appointment only. Reservations can be made by calling 386-437-7350 ext. 0, weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Since the health department has stopped offering COVID testing for travel, residents requiring this verification will need to coordinate with a Flagler County pharmacy.

The health department will transition to offer tests and vaccinations five afternoons a week starting Monday, August 9, with the option of adding a second location (120 Airport Road, 2sd floor) in the coming weeks. No appointment is necessary for vaccinations. The Department of Health currently offers the Pfizer vaccine, which is approved for adults and children over 12 years of age.

Snyder added, “On July 28, the CDC updated its guidelines that even people vaccinated in high-risk communities like Flagler County should wear masks indoors. The Delta variant is highly contagious, which helps explain why we had 665 positive cases this week compared to 400 a week ago. Please get vaccinated, wear a mask, wash your hands and respect social distancing as much as possible. If you need to get tested and have no symptoms, contact any pharmacy in the area. It’s our shot, Flagler. Be careful. ”For more information on COVID-19 vaccination and testing efforts, please visit https://flhealthcovid19.gov/.

“Everything now, we have to assume, is in our hands; we have no right to assume otherwise. If we – and now I mean relatively conscious whites and relatively conscious blacks, who, like lovers, must insist on, or create, the consciousness of others – will not falter in our duty now, we may be able to, a handful that we are, to end the racial nightmare, and realize our country, and change the history of the world. If we do not dare all now, the fulfillment of this prophecy, recreated from the chanting Bible by a slave, is upon us: “God gave Noah the sign of the rainbow, More water, fire next time!

–James Baldwin, from “The Fire Next Time” in Collected Essays (Library of America) Balwin was born on this date in 1924.
