Barcelona (Reuters) – The Spanish government plans to pardon nine leaders jailed in a 2017 independent bid that failed in Catalonia on Tuesday, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Monday.

Sanchez aims to ease tensions in the northeast region and start negotiations between the central government and Catalan authorities, with the amnesty the cabinet still has to stamp at weekly meetings.

“The conflict did not help solve the problem,” Sanchez said at an event attended by around 300 members of Catalan civil society at Barcelona’s iconic opera house.

“Someone has to take the first step to reach an agreement,” he said. “The Spanish government will now take this first step. ”

According to polls, around 60% of Spaniards, and all opposition parties, made nine politicians and activists jail in 2019 chaotic, sometimes causing Spain’s biggest political crisis in decades. We oppose liberation for our role in the violent events.
