Here’s what you need to know.
Student loans
The major announcement of $ 4.5 billion in student loan cancellations sent shock waves through the student loan community. After years of inexplicable frustration and refusal, some student loan borrowers would have a second chance to cancel their student loans. President Joe Biden has now canceled $ 11.5 billion in student loans since becoming president. This includes a major announcement this week that $ 2 billion in student loans will be canceled in a matter of weeks. It’s important to understand who qualifies for this new student loan forgiveness and who doesn’t:
Who is eligible for this student loan discount?
To be eligible for this student loan forgiveness, you must be a student loan borrower with federal student loans and pursue a public service loan forgiveness. This is a federal program created by Congress in 2007 that waives all of your federal student loans if you work full time for a qualified utility or nonprofit employer, make 120 student loan repayments, and respond other requirements. If you haven’t enrolled in the Public Service Loan Cancellation Program, it’s not too late to enroll. You can still get full forgiveness on your student loans for all of your federal student loans. (Here’s who qualifies for the student loan waiver right now).
Which student loans are eligible?
After years of 98% rejection rates, the Biden administration relaxed the rules for canceling student loans. There is now a limited student loan forgiveness exemption that allows some student loan borrowers to obtain âcreditâ for the student loan forgiveness, even though they would not have previously qualified. (Here’s how to apply for a limited student loan forgiveness). Previously, only direct loans were eligible for this student loan discount. Alternatively, a student loan borrower could consolidate their student loans into a direct consolidation loan. However, any student loan payments made prior to the student loan consolidation would be ineligible. Now, in addition to direct loans, Perkins loans and FFEL loans are both eligible for a student loan discount. In addition, all previous student loan payments for Perkins loans and FFEL student loans are also eligible. To qualify for a student loan discount if you have Perkins or FFEL loans, borrowers will need to consolidate their student loans by October 31, 2022. (Does Biden owe you a student loan discount?)
Which student loan borrowers are not eligible for their student loan exemption?
The following student loan borrowers will not be eligible for this student loan forgiveness:
- student loan borrowers who are not enrolled in the public service loan exemption;
- student loan borrowers who hope to get student loan forgiveness for private student loans; (Here’s how to get a student loan discount)
- student loan borrowers with FFEL or Perkins Loans who do not consolidate their student loans;
- student loan borrowers who fail to complete a limited student loan waiver waiver by October 31, 2022;
- student loan borrowers who do not meet the requirements of the public service loan forgiveness program.
(The cancellation of the student loan has a major problem)
How do you get student loan forgiveness if you don’t work in the public service?
There are other ways to get student loan forgiveness even if you don’t work in the public service.
What are other ways to get student loan forgiveness?
